Goal

Understand BINANCE COIN OI DELTA — the change in open interest per bar and how to read its color.

BINANCE COIN OI DELTA on BTC/USDT: bar-to-bar change in open interest, $M
BINANCE COIN OI DELTA on BTC/USDT: bar-to-bar change in open interest, $M
What it shows

Change in OI per bar, in millions of dollars.

  • A histogram. The column always points up: it shows the size of the change without a sign.
  • Color shows direction: green — OI rose, red — it fell.
  • A tall column — many positions opened or closed during the bar.

Color is not longs or shorts. Every position has two sides: for every long there is a short. OI counts contracts, not sides. A green column means new positions opened, longs and shorts at once. Red means they closed, also both sides. You can't tell from the color who initiated.

Look at the neighbors to see who initiated. The price on this bar — which way it moved. COIN TRADES — who hit the market, buyers or sellers.

Every position has two sides. OI DELTA says “more” or “fewer”, but not “longs” or “shorts”.
What it's for

Find bars where positions opened or closed en masse, and see what drives the move: new money or old positions closing. OI shows the level, DELTA shows the jolt.

For example.

  • A green column five times taller than its neighbors, an up candle, COIN TRADES green. A big batch of positions opened, and buyers initiated: longs entered at market, shorts met them with limit orders. The move is on new money.
  • A green column, a down candle, COIN TRADES red. Also new positions, but sellers initiated: shorts entered at market.
  • A red column on a sharp down candle. Mass closing, including long liquidations — the same bar shows up in COIN LIQS. The move is on closing, no new money.
  • A red column on an up candle. Shorts are closing — they are bought back at market. A rise without new positions.
  • After a big green column, watch OI: if it holds, the positions are still in; if it falls, they were closed.

Alert: the BINANCE COIN OI DELTA metric with the same Contracts and Units. For a level threshold — “greater than / less than”. For the change in OI per bar — the BINANCE COIN OI metric with the comparison type “increased by X%” or “decreased by X%”: it compares with the previous bar.

  2. On the same bar, look at the candle and COIN TRADES.
What you should get. The column said “positions opened”, the candle and trades said who initiated.
Takeaway

OI DELTA is the size of the OI change per bar, without a sign. The columns always point up; only color shows direction: green — positions opened, red — closed. Color doesn't tell you whether it's longs or shorts: every position has two sides. The initiator is shown by the candle and COIN TRADES on the same bar.
