Clusters

Goal

Take apart the “Clusters” chart type: what it shows inside a candle, how to enable it and what to configure.

What it shows

A chart type that breaks the trade volume inside each candle down by price: how much was bought and sold at each price.

  • Each candle is a column of levels. A level is one price step, with the volume for that candle inside it.
  • The length of the bar or the number in the cell is the volume at that level. The colour is market buys or market sells.
  • The candle’s thickest level is marked as POC — the price where the most was traded during that candle.
  • On the left is the profile for the visible screen: the same levels added up across all candles on the screen.
  • At the bottom is the delta histogram: buys minus sells for each candle, and the candle’s volume as numbers.
  • Hover over a level for a tooltip: time, price, volume, buys, sells, delta and the number of trades.

Clusters are computed from Binance trades of the coin and market on the chart. The chart type requires a subscription; regular candles stay free.

1Five cluster types

The “Cluster type” field next to the chart type changes what is counted at each level. All five frames below are the same hourly BTC/USDT candles.

Volume. At a level — the whole trade volume for the candle, buys and sells together. The bars are grey, the candle’s longest level is highlighted in white: that is the POC. At the bottom — the candle’s delta and volume. Good for seeing at which prices the most was traded.

“Volume” type: grey bars by volume, the white level is the candle’s POC

Delta. At a level — market buys minus market sells. A green bar to the right — more buys, a red one — more sells, the length — by how much. You see who was pressing at each price, not how much was traded.

“Delta” type: a green level — an excess of market buys, a red one — of sells
“Delta” type: a green level — an excess of market buys, a red one — of sells

Buys and sells. Both sides separately: sells as a red bar to the left of the candle’s axis, buys as a green bar to the right. This is the most detailed view: you see both the size of trading and the excess at each level.

“Buys / sells” type: sells to the left in red, buys to the right in green
“Buys / sells” type: sells to the left in red, buys to the right in green

Trades. The same as “Volume”, but the number of trades is counted, not their volume. A level with many small trades is thick here, while one large order is thin. Compare with “Volume”: where they differ, the volume was made by a few large trades.

“Trades” type: the bar length is the number of trades at the level, not the volume
“Trades” type: the bar length is the number of trades at the level, not the volume

Trades delta. The number of market buys minus the number of market sells. Green — more buys by count, red — more sells. At the bottom — the delta by number of trades and the total trades for the candle.

“Trades delta” type: the excess by number of trades, not by volume

The type changes only what is counted. The price step, POC, value area, imbalance, profile and histogram work in all five.

What it's for

See at which prices inside a candle the volume went through and who created it: market buyers or market sellers. A regular candle shows only four prices.

For example.

  • Inside an hourly candle one level has several times more volume than its neighbours and is marked POC. That is the price where the most was traded during the hour.
  • “Delta” type: at the upper levels of the candle there were more market sells than buys, although the candle closed higher. You can see who was pressing at the top.
  • The delta histogram under the chart: a green bar — more market buys during the candle, a red one — more sells.
Where to find it
  1. Top left corner → the chart type list (where “Candles” is) → Clusters. There are eleven types in the list; clusters are last. Next to it is a cluster icon button: it switches between candles and clusters with one click.
  2. Two quick fields appear next to the chart type: Cluster type (Volume, Delta, Buys / sells, Trades, Trades delta) and price step.
  3. The other settings are under the “Chart settings” gear at the top right → the tab Clusters.
Chart settings → the “Clusters” tab: view, type, step, fill and marks

In alerts

A chart type cannot be put in an alert. Volume, market buys and sells per bar are available in the COIN TRADES and COIN TRADES Q. indicators, the excess in COIN MARKET DELTA SMART.

Try it yourself
  1. Switch the chart type to “Clusters” on BTC/USDT 1h.
  2. In the quick “Cluster type” field choose Delta, then go back to Volume. Hover over the thickest level of one candle.
What you should get. The tooltip shows the price, volume, buys, sells and delta of this level. The POC mark is on this same level: it is the price where the most was traded during the candle.
The chart type is available with a subscription or on a trial.
Takeaway

Clusters break each candle’s volume down by price: how much was bought and sold at each price. Five value types, two drawing views, a price step, the POC, value area and imbalance marks, the profile and the delta histogram. The chart type requires a subscription.
